All products are made from materials of one sort or another - or even several sorts combined to have special properties that are particular useful.  For instance steel is a metal that has a range of qualities that include strength and ductility and this led to its use in making chain-mail armour in the Middle Ages.   Why do you think chain-mail is not used today by modern combat troops around the world - it certainly seemed effective when it was first used  - so why not now ?
