The Mechanical Sculpture / Automata task involves some creative thought based on an understanding of how mechanisms convert one kind of movement to another.  A good starting point for the task would be to examine the ‘four different types of motion’ - Linear, Reciprocating, Rotary and Oscillating.

Mechanisms that can change these types from one to another - as well as changing the speed of the Output when compared to the Input motion - include cams, gears, levers and linkages.

The first task then will be to research how these change the movement and to do that a good starting point would be to look at videos of moving toys and whirligigs on YouTube.
